»Das Pleyel Quartett überrascht und überzeugt mit eher unbekannten Streichquartetten Donizettis.
Die Streichquartette Gaetano Donizettis (ab 1817) sind bis heute nahezu unbekannt geblieben, trotz ihrer unbestreitbaren Qualitäten und ihrer wichtigen Vermittlerfunktion zwischen dem späten 18. Jahrhundert und der Streichquartettentwicklung in Italien im 19. Jahrhundert. Die Erkundung dieses Werkkorpus liegt dem Kölner Pleyel Quartett hörbar am Herzen, und die Lebendigkeit des Vortrags unterstützt einerseits die Nähe etwa zu Haydns oder Cherubinis Formmodell und andererseits Donizettis Ambition, auch jenseits der Oper Neues zu schaffen.
Der Ernst der Kompositionen beeindruckt, auch die vollständige Unabhängigkeit von seinen Bemühungen im Bereich der Oper. Stilistisch würde man den Komponisten vielleicht nicht identifizieren können, doch haben wir hier qualitätvolle Musik ganz auf der Höhe ihrer Zeit. Wollen wir hoffen, dass das Pleyel Quartett, wie üblich in historisch informierter Spielweise und auf historischen Instrumenten, nicht nur weitere Donizetti-Quartette, sondern vielleicht auch solche weiterer Zeitgenossen aus allen Bereichen Europas erkunden mag. Vorbildliche Interpretationen von bislang unterschätztem Repertoire – mehr davon!«

This CD adds another feather to their cap with fine playing from all concerned. I can heartily recommend this recording to all fans of the string quartet.«
